Introduction:
At present, liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects are now well established onshore, yet, no floating LNG (FLNG) terminal has been so far achieved to date. Existing LNG schemes use conventional pipelines to carry gas from offshore production platforms to a liquefaction plant onshore. Here the gas is cooled before being transferred as a liquid to specialised tankers and shipped to the customer, where it is re-gasified. The problem is that some fields are too remote to economically build a pipeline. With the LNG industry nearing its zenith, it is a certainty that the strategies which can be implemented today will determine the survival of LNG business tomorrow.
Royal Dutch/Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil company, is leading the way in developing the world's first floating LNG scheme. It has put forward a proposal for its Greater Sunrise field in the Timor Sea that, it claims, could lower the cost of development by as much as 40 per cent. As experts predict that FLNG could help reduce the environmental impact of extracting gas, besides lowering costs,.it would also minimise the need to disturb the seabed and would reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions produced by eliminating the use of large jet engines normally needed to drive the gas to shore.
As the demand for natural gas increases over time and limited number of large gas fields nearby, the only method of producing and offloading natural gas, other than through pipelines, is with the FLNG vessels. Making these prospects economic is a daunting challenge, particularly when some gas fields are hundreds of miles offshore and with no market for the gas close to hand.
The individual components of an FLNG scheme are similar to the well-established technologies used in LNG tankers and onshore LNG plants for years. But pulling them all together is proving to be a complex task for engineers. In a recent global LNG study, it is believed that floating schemes would be in the frontline of technologies to drive the cost of gas production down.
Highlights:
Ezar Yazid Jaafar, Senior Manager, Strategic Business Planning, PETRONAS has kindly consented to deliver the Keynote Address at the Conference.
The Conference:
This inaugural FLNG Asia Summit 2008, Maximising Resources conference will bring together industry proponents who will share with their valuable insights and provide innovative solutions to both commercial and operational issues faced by the industry today. This is a significant event organised by Hydrocarbon Asia, the down-stream magazine, which serves Asia and the Middle East since 1974. It promotes the development of resources and address a series of critical issues ranging from escalating operational costs, pricing issues and the future of FLNG.
The conference will also focus on the cardinal issues of regional markets, price relativities between oil and LNG, small/medium scale maritime LNG logistic chains and local distribution in the Asia Pacific region. the fulcrum of the Conference will be on parameters followed by the key regulatory bodies in the market prevailing on a precise and transparent methodology to asses the pricing of natural gas, transportation and driving factors for the Asian markets.
Theme:
The theme of the Conference is Production & Transportation of LNG in future - The Next Phase.
and this technology conference is scheduled to take place at Prince Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 27 to 28th November 2008.
Topics
The Conference will provide opportunities for companies to share their experience and knowledge with an audience of hundreds of industry professionals. Join the erudite group of speakers who provide valuable information about real-world applications of technology in the LNG exploration, production, liquification, transportation, maintenance and complex environments of LNG scene today.
We cordially invite companies involved in the areas of deepwater and subsea development to send in their abstract for review by our Technical Program Committee, which comprises of Operators and Technology providers.
Papers to be presented should be in line with the following topics:
- Concepts of Offshore Production of LNG
- Gas Processing Technology LNG, GTL, CNG
- Primary concerns in Asian LNG pricing
- Innovations and impediments in Offshore liquefaction
- Regasification terminals for Standard LNG carriers
|
FLNG construction and technology
FLNG vessels and Operations
Manpower deployment
Environmental and safety concerns in the process of LNG
The future of FLNG in Asia
|
Papers on any of the topics mentioned above are being actively solicited although other topics of equal interest will also be considered. Companies who wish to share their experience/knowledge in the development projects are invited to provide an abstract of their paper for consideration by the programme committee.
We invite professionals and individuals to submit abstracts, which should be less than 400 words, for consideration by the program committee. The abstract should reach us before 29th August 2008 followed with a photograph and the biodata of the author. You may either submit your abstract online or via e-mail.
Guidelines:
The program committee will review the written papers to ensure that
the content is in line with the objective of the conference, which is:
"SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
ASSOCIATED WITH TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES IN LNG, GTL, CNG TECHNOLOGY.
Please note:
"Papers of purely marketing/commerical nature will not be considered".
In line with the conference theme and objective, the program committee
is careful in selecting the topics and invite speakers to present
papers on their own experience to share with the conference
participants.
All final papers MUST be in written 'word format' so that later publication in PetroMin magazine is possible. 'Power Point' submissions for publication will not be considered, but the presenter should present his paper using Power Point that covers the main points of the paper and various illustrations.
Speaker benefit: For the benefit of the industry, selected papers will be published in Hydrocarbon Asia (in print) and will also be presented on our website.
